House of Staunton: Memorial Day sale
Pete Stein sent me the following message via email:
Ed,
As we still have many members who show up without sets this sale may be helpful. 15% off with code HERO15, 20% off on purchases $200+ with code HERO20. So their $30 sets are $25.5. Most of their sets can be viewed and ordered via Amazon. I identified one of these rather nice sets in a previous email – it’s one of the weighted $30 sets with a 3.75 inch king (USCF approved Staunton style).
Please announce on our site. Thanks.
Pete

I apologize for not researching this thoroughly. The discount code is not recognized via Amazon, but only on the HOS site. HOS engages in unscrupulous shipping fees. For example, an $18 set will have a $18 shipping fee which of course is totally ridiculous. There are sets offered on Amazon via HOS and others that are reasonable and have free shipping for Amazon Prime members. I recommend going that route. Even if you’re not a Prime member it’s easy enough to find someone who is and can place an order on your behalf.
I just ordered and received one of these: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000N33HWM?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title
For $21 this is an awesome set. Beautiful look and feel, weighting is perfect, nice felt bottoms. Looks great on standard tournament size boards. Free shipping for Amazon Prime members.
This should be our official default set recommendation for members looking to acquire a set. I think this is an unbeatable value.
Cheers,
Pete
Our club secretary is now using this set at all club meetings. It has received unanimously good reviews so far. Stop by if you wish to inspect the set before ordering from Amazon.
Another set that has caught my attention is this “Fischer” set on Amazon: “The House of Staunton – The Fischer Plastic Chess Set – Pieces Only – 3.75 inch King” for $29.95 (I’m using the title rather than the URL which is too long for this format). If anyone acquires it for regular deployment at CCC please let us know. I don’t know if this “Fischer” set is intended to be a cheaper knock off of the “Fischer Ultimate” set ($50 !?), but regardless it is very attractive and has all the premium features (styling, weighted, felt bottoms, standard Staunton). Yes, it’s $10 more than the default recommendation above, but that may not be significant enough to impact the decision to buy for some people.
