♟️ Chess Club Do’s & Don’ts for a Smooth, Well‑Equipped Meetup
The following Do’s and Don’ts were written to facilitate smooth and well-equipped meetups for over-the-board chess play. Note that the Do’s represent widely accepted norms for formal and informal club chess play.
✅ DO
- Bring your own chess set.
Our club runs best when everyone contributes a board and pieces. - Use a standard tournament‑size Staunton set.
This means regulation‑sized pieces in traditional black/white or natural/ebony colors. It keeps games consistent and easy to play. - Bring a board that matches your set.
The squares should be the correct size for your pieces (typically 2″–2.25″ squares for tournament knights). A clean, ‘readable’ board makes games smoother for everyone. - Bring a chess clock if you have one.
Especially if you enjoy blitz or rapid. Clocks help keep games fair and flowing.
❌ DON’T
- Don’t rely on others to supply equipment.
If everyone assumes someone else will bring a set, nobody gets to play. - Don’t bring novelty or non‑Staunton pieces.
They may look fun, but they’re hard to use in serious or casual club play. - Don’t bring mismatched or undersized boards.
Tiny boards, oversized pieces, or odd color schemes slow down games and cause confusion. - Don’t expect your opponent to always provide a clock.
If you want timed games, bring your own so you’re never stuck waiting.
