Monday Night Moves at Madhouse Coffee

For the third Monday in a row, I found myself back at Vegas Chess Club’s Monday Night Chess at Madhouse Coffee, tucked away on Desert Inn and Durango. The venue lives up to its name — a true slice of Vegas eccentricity. It’s artsy, a little rebellious, and proudly avant‑garde, complete with pastries that flirt with sin and a black‑light restroom glowing like a surreal art installation. Even the graffiti hums with neon life.

Owen Carver, the driving force behind Vegas Chess Club, hosts the event with his signature enthusiasm. He arrives armed with chessboards and pieces, ready to spark battles of wit and will. Space inside is cozy — enough for a couple of intense games — but the patio offers extra room for those who prefer their chess with a breeze and a view of the Vegas night.

The players here are no pushovers. Each match feels like a test of nerve and creativity, and several members of Casual Chess Club have stepped up to the challenge. It’s a friendly rivalry that keeps the local chess scene buzzing.

As of this writing, Monday Night Chess kicks off around 4 PM and runs until the last game is played — or until the caffeine runs out.
