There’s No Place Like Casual Chess Club™

It’s a rare honor to face a chess grandmaster like Timur Gareyev—renowned worldwide as The Blindfold Chess King and a Guinness World Record holder. Timur (pictured far right in the group photo below) is a familiar and welcome presence at Casual Chess Club™ whenever he’s in town.
At our Tuesday general meeting, Angelo A. (pictured right, playing black) sat across from his opponent, unaware he was facing none other than chess grandmaster Timur Gareyev—famously known as The Blindfold Chess King. The revelation came as a delightful surprise to Angelo.
In December 2016, Grandmaster Timur Gareyev etched his name into chess history by setting a Guinness World Record for the most simultaneous blindfolded chess games. The feat took place at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where Gareyev played 48 games at once—without seeing a single board.
🚴♂️ What made it even more remarkable? He rode an exercise bike throughout the 19-hour, 9-minute event. Despite the mental and physical demands, Gareyev scored 35 wins, 7 draws, and 6 losses, achieving an impressive 80.2% win rate.
This performance surpassed previous records held by FM Marc Lang (46 games) and GM Miguel Najdorf (45 games), solidifying Gareyev’s reputation as The Blindfold Chess King
