Magnus Carlsen LOSES In The Park!
This resonated with me as I’ve been contemplating “chess in the park” for a number of years. The natural setting has a lot to recommend it when the weather is pleasant. Of course the caliber of the participants is a big factor in the quality of the experience as Levy aptly illustrates in this video. Magnus is very creative in casual games as is evidenced by his Wing Gambit twist on the Grand Prix. The move a3 certainly is not novel in the GP, but I’ve not seen it followed up by b4 in this move order. The game quickly became murky, but Magnus managed to get a winning plus after some inaccuracies by Anish – only to lose on time! The agony and ecstasy of flagging. Levy also pointed out something that I’ve had to remind several club members of recently – the accepted norm and convention for blitz is a minimum of one game of each color unless otherwise agreed to in advance. Please be mindful of chess etiquette to make our Casual Chess Club experience as enjoyable as possible. Have fun!
