Happy Casual Chess Club Day

On this day 8 years ago, two leaders of a local chess club in Vegas discussed the idea of meeting at Panera Bread on Eastern Ave (about half a mile north of Saint Rose Parkway) for casual chess, and even put an announcement on Meetup.com, back when we had RATED USCF chess at that old art gallery on Colorado Street, downtown.

It’s easy to remember because they say that April 1st is “April Fool’s Day,” and 2012 was the year I got tired of playing chess on the computer, did a Google search, and that’s how I found that USCF club in the art gallery.

This is far from foolhardy. Now, 8 years later, we no longer use Meetup.com, no longer meet at ANY Panera Bread, don’t even rate our games anymore, and have our own website!!!

The success of this club comes from having local chess players, who are looking for a casual game, or two. Every player that has shown up at Jersey Mikes in the past has played an important role in keeping the casual style of chess playing alive.

Let’s hope for another 8 years.
